We’re a non-profit food festival based in rural Freeman, SD. The organization is guided by an eight-person Board of Directors drawn from across southeast South Dakota and the Chislic Circle. Simply put, if we make money in a given year - we’re putting that money towards ensuring future years of the Festival in some fashion.
Know that your money is always going to making the South Dakota Chislic Festival continue to be fantastic for years to come!
Our vision is to develop the South Dakota Chislic Festival into the region’s premiere food festival.
We accomplish this by continually focusing on providing an exemplary experience in all facets of our Festival.
Rural Inspired, Community Focused
The tradition of chislic comes not from cities, the wealthy or the privileged, but from the rural, hardworking farm tradition of the Germans from Russia people. We thrive on the rural, while building the region through vibrant community.
Each year after setting aside money for future years, we designate two Freeman-area non-profits to receive grants as recognition for the effort and support it takes to pull off an event of this scale in a rural community. Every three years, we open up applications for two new organizations to be supported.
In 2018, we donated $2000 to the Heritage Hall Museum and Archives in recognition of the Festival’s heritage and the German-Russian ancestors who sparked this opportunity for us all -
And $2000 to the Freeman Community Development Corporation, in recognition of their fiscal sponsorship in the inaugural year of the Festival and ongoing work for Freeman and the surrounding area moving forward.
